On 1 July, the RNCZ Workshop: Towards the Decarbonisation of the Naval Industry’, took place at the University of Coimbra’s Figueira da Foz Campus. This event marked a pivotal stage in the development of the Zero Carbon Naval Roadmap (RNCZ) project.
The workshop was attended by around 30 representatives from shipyards, technology companies, public entities, research centres and other strategic stakeholders, who came together to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition in the sector.
The opening session was led by the Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra, Nuno Mendonça.
This was followed by Francisco Araújo from CEVAL – Alto Minho, the project promoter, presenting the project, and Hugo Marques Sousa from Magellan Circle – European Affairs Consultancy, sharing the main results of the regional consultation cycle.
Throughout the programme, technical and strategic contributions were presented by experts from various partner entities, such as Manuel Carrasqueira from the Qualiseg Group, João Alves from HAEDES, Ivone Rocha from TELLES law society, and António Lorena from 3drivers, addressing topics such as energy efficiency, the ESG framework, international perspectives, and legal instruments to support decarbonisation.
The morning also included a roundtable discussion, moderated by Rúben Tiago Mendes from Magellan Circle. This brought together Bruno Costa from ATLANTICEAGLE SHIPBUILDING, Eduardo Feio from theAdministração dos Portos de Aveiro e da Figueira da Foz, and Telmo Ferreira from PRIO. The discussion focused on the urgent need for concerted action and the definition of integrated measures to ensure a sustainable future for the naval sector.
Gonçalo Santos from Fórum Oceano, the promoter of the RNCZ, gave the closing remarks. He called for the mobilisation of the entire ecosystem around ambitious environmental goals, thereby reinforcing the RNCZ’s role as a strategic tool for the green transformation of the Portuguese blue economy.
