In Portugal, the naval sector is particularly important, due to the country’s strategic geographic location. This sector is essential for the country’s economy, through the creation of jobs and the contribution to GDP.
The Naval Industry supports several important sectors of for the Portuguese economy, namely:
- Fisheries and aquaculture
- Maritime transport, ports and logistics
- Tourism and leisure
- Offshore Energy
The Naval Industry in political and economic strategy at European and national level
The Naval Construction, Repair and Maintenance sector was indicated, in the Europe 2020 Strategy, as a sector with a huge contribution to intelligent growth and innovation, based on sustainable and competitive development. The document also highlighted the industry’s potential for social and territorial cohesion.
In turn, the National Strategy for the Sea 2021 – 2030 considers CRMN as one of the priority areas of intervention. It also states the need for the sector to receive support for the “development of technological systems for optimizing and controlling production, that will allow it to compete within the European market, based on an image of quality and sustainability”.
