However, maritime activity also has a significant impact on the environment, especially in terms of air emissions and ocean pollution. To minimize this damage, the sector is regulated by <strong>international standards,<\/strong> which seek to promote more sustainable practices and protect the marine ecosystem.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Among the main international regulatory frameworks are the <strong>MARPOL Convention<\/strong> and the <strong>Hong Kong Amendments<\/strong>, which address different aspects of maritime pollution and sustainable ship management. Adopted in 1973 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), MARPOL aims to prevent pollution of the marine environment, both through accidents and regular ship operations. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Image:<\/em> <em>International Maritime Organization (IMO)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>The convention covers six main factors, which deal with different sources of pollution:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>I<\/strong>: Prevention of oil pollution;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>II<\/strong>: Control of pollution by liquid harmful substances transported in bulk;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>III<\/strong>: Prevention of pollution by packaged dangerous substances;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>IV<\/strong>: Prevention of pollution from ship sewage;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>V<\/strong>: Prevention of pollution by ship litter;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>VI<\/strong>: Air pollution prevention, which includes limits on emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and greenhouse gases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>Annex VI <\/strong>of MARPOL, updated with the regulation known as <strong>IMO 2020,<\/strong> is particularly relevant for reducing atmospheric emissions, as it establishes that the sulfur content in marine fuels must be reduced to 0.5%, a measure that has with the aim of reducing air pollution and improving the quality of life in coastal areas.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background is-style-dots\" style=\"background-color:#134b9b;color:#134b9b\"\/>\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Hong Kong Amendments: The Sustainable Dismantling of Ships<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 44%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">Another important regulatory framework is the <strong>Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships<\/strong>, adopted in 2009, which will come into force in June 2025. These standards determine that ships must be built and maintained in a way that facilitates their future recycling. In the <strong>maritime sector,<\/strong> these guidelines directly impact decarbonization targets , requiring companies to adopt more stringent measures, such as the use of alternative fuels and energy efficiency technologies.
